The dog comes into heat for the first time at the age of 6-12 months. We advise to have the dog for sterilization 2-3 months after the first heat.

In laparoscopic sterilization, we make small incisions in the abdominal wall. We introduce instruments to locate and remove the ovaries. We recommend this procedure over the traditional method for dogs weighing 15 kilograms or more.

What are the main reasons for recommending laparoscopic sterilization?

  • Preventing mammary gland tumors later in life.
  • Preventing uterus infections later in life.
  • No more heat.
  • No unwanted coverage.
  • No pregnancy.
  • No false pregnancy with (high) milk production.

What are the main advantages of laparoscopic sterilization?

  • Less pain than traditional sterilization
  • Shorter duration of anesthesia
  • Reduced risk of infections
  • Dogs become mobile and active again faster

Does the dog gain weight after sterilization?
A disadvantage of sterilization is that the dog converts its food more easily into fat and can therefore gain weight. This can be prevented by giving the dog a preventive light diet or a little less food.

Incontinence
Another disadvantage is incontinence after sterilization. This can occasionally occur in larger dogs (> 20 kg). We recommend that larger dogs have one heat cycle. Due to the effect of female hormones on the bladder neck muscle, there is a smaller chance of incontinence. In smaller dogs, you rarely or never see incontinence after sterilization.

What does the day of surgery for laparoscopic sterilization look like?

On the day of the operation, you bring your dog to the practice. It is important that your dog is fasting. This means that your dog must not have eaten since the evening before the operation (19.00 p.m.). Drinking water is allowed. Your dog will be taken in by one of our assistants and placed in an animal enclosure at the back. If you would like to stay while your animal is being anesthetized (put to sleep), that is also possible. A time will be agreed with you when you can pick up your dog again.

What are the costs of laparoscopic sterilization in dogs?

The cost of laparoscopic sterilization of your dog depends on its weight. This is due to the resources required for sterilization. Below are the prices per weight class (prices as of 01-01-2026):

11 – 25 kg: € 674,32 including VAT

26 – 40 kg: € 708,48 including VAT

>40 kg: €718,05 including VAT

These prices include admission before and after the operation, pre-anesthetic examination, a painkilling injection and antibiotic injection and all anesthetics. Costs for antibiotics and painkillers after the operation are added to this. In addition, your dog may need a cap or suit so that she cannot reach the stitches.
