Why blood tests?
There may be several reasons why a blood test is indicated for your pet. Blood will often be tested if your pet is ill. A blood test can also be performed as a 'screening' prior to an operation or a visit abroad. Increasingly, we also perform blood tests on elderly patients to detect certain diseases at an early stage.
Blood sugar
If diabetes mellitus is suspected, it may be necessary to determine the glucose level in your pet's blood. A small amount of blood is taken and then placed in a device (see right) to determine the glucose level in the blood.
Blood smear
To make a blood smear, a small amount of blood is taken from your cat or dog. This blood is then spread on a slide and then stained. This staining makes the white and red blood cells visible. The proportion and shape of these cells can sometimes provide a better picture of a possible condition.
Catalyst One, Procyte One and SNAP pro
With this modern blood analysis equipment we have many possibilities for blood tests. For example, we can do progesterone determinations, measure bile acids and determine pancreatic function.
Submitting blood to laboratories
We have most of our blood tests performed by laboratories. Because these laboratories have extensive diagnostic capabilities, we prefer this for non-urgent patients. We work with Idexx, among others, Laboklin, biocontrol en The Animal Health Service.
