Information about castrating your tomcat
The male cat is sexually mature at the age of 6-7 months. We therefore advise to have the male cat neutered around this age. If the male cat starts urinating and/or spraying in the house earlier, it is better to have the male cat neutered immediately. Otherwise, the cat can learn the spraying behavior and in 5% of cases the spraying male cat can continue to spray despite the castration.
De benefits of castration are:
- Less chance of spraying or peeing in the house.
- Less strong urine odor.
- Less urge for the tomcat to roam outside and therefore less chance of fighting with other cats.
- No more chance of unwanted kittens.
The only disadvantage is that the tomcat can get fatter. This can be prevented by giving a light diet or less food.
The operation:
On the day of the operation, you bring your cat to the practice. It is important that your cat is fasting. This means that your cat must not have eaten since the evening before the operation (19.00 p.m.). Drinking water is allowed. Your cat will be taken in by one of our assistants and placed in an animal enclosure at the back. A time will be agreed with you when you can pick up the cat again.
Costs:
The costs for castrating your tomcat are €96,37 (price as of 01-01-2026). This includes admission before and after the operation, pre-anesthetic examination and all anesthetic agents. Costs for antibiotics and pain relief after the operation are added to this.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the practice. To make an appointment for your pet's surgery, it is best to contact the practice by phone.
Information about sterilizing your cat
The cat or female cat comes into heat for the first time at the age of 6-7 months. We also advise to have the cat spayed at this age. This can even be done before the first heat. In principle, only the ovaries are removed during the operation. Only when the uterus is abnormal, it is also removed.
De benefits of sterilization are:
- No more heats.
- No unwanted pregnancy.
- No uterine infection or tumor.
- Reduced risk of developing mammary gland tumors in older age.
The only disadvantage of neutering is that the cat may become fatter, but this can be prevented by feeding the cat less food, a light diet or a Neutered Cat diet after the operation
